SEQ Field trip August 2025

The ASA is pleased to announce it's next SEQ Field trip which will involving a walking tour of the living wall designs by our member and Botanist, Erik van Zuilekom.

Erik is a well-known Brisbane based botanist and the lead designer for Fytogreen, specialising in living architecture design, specialist species selection for aerial ecological colonisation of buildings and specialised exposure analysis to ensure integrated plantings are sustainable.

Part of this process Erik oversees involves studying plants in their habitats, understanding their ecological functions as living agents of change that we can apply to generate and sustain healthy ecological outcomes that respond to the complexities and stressors inherent to human habitats. Each plant has a life-story that relates to where it evolved, the mixed communities it has developed to be part of and an unfolding story of how it changes its environment as part of ecological succession in habitat.

This tour of four large-scale vertical and column garden installations will present a wide range of species across indoor to outdoor applications, full sun to permanent shade, high wind to protected niches. We will explore the diverse ecological functioning of species generally grown in pots or in gardens, observing how many such species function in aerial habitats from cliff faces to epiphytes in trees.

The field trip will be on August 24th where we will meet outside the South Brisbane Train station main entrance (look for the Green ASA flag) at 9AM with a 9:20 AM departure via foot for an approximate 2-3km walk over a 1.5-2 hour window.

We recommend that you utilise the various park and rides at your local train station and take advantage of the 50c public transport fares to attend the event. Local parking is also available at the Queensland Art gallery however can be quite pricey and subject to availability.

We also recommend bringing shoes that are comfortable to walk in, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle and something to keep you dry in the case of rain due to the outside nature of the event.

Please RSVP via the Eventbrite link HERE as number are limited and in case we need to directly contact members who wish to attend with further updates.

Members are also welcome to being a guest to the event for their first time for free and they will also be required to purchase a guest ticket

We hope to see you all there!
